How to remember the 9 times table

  1. 1

The finger trick: hold your hands out and fold down the finger for the number you’re multiplying by (for 9 × 4, the fourth). Fingers to the left are tens, to the right are ones: 3 and 6 → 36.

  2. 2

Up to 9 × 10, the digits of the answer add up to 9 (18, 27, 36, 45…), and the tens digit is one less than the number you multiply by: 9 × 7 → 6 tens → 63.

  3. 3

    9 × n = 10 × n − n: 9 × 8 = 80 − 8 = 72.

  4. 4

Order doesn’t matter: 9 × 6 = 6 × 9 = 54. Learn a fact once and you know two — and you already know part of this table from the others.

  5. 5

    Division is multiplication backwards: 54 ÷ 9 = 6, because 9 × 6 = 54. Learn to multiply and division comes free.
