How to learn the times tables

  1. 1

Start with the easy ones: 2, 5 and 10. Then 3, 4 and 9 (the 9s have a finger trick). The trickiest are 6, 7 and 8 — but by then you’ll already know most of their facts.

  2. 2

    Order doesn’t matter, and that halves the work: 3 × 8 = 8 × 3. Of the 144 squares on the 12 × 12 chart, only 78 are different facts.

  3. 3

    The square numbers on the diagonal are anchors: 6 × 6 = 36, 7 × 7 = 49, 8 × 8 = 64. From them it’s easy to reach the neighbours: 7 × 8 = 49 + 7 = 56.

  4. 4

Five minutes a day beats an hour once a week. One Math Race run takes less than a minute — just the right dose.
